You and your students use computers to conduct investigations and analyze data.

The Are We Getting the Oxygen We Need? unit consists of eight sessions divided into three parts. Before beginning the unit, students complete the Pre-Unit Questionnaire. Then, in Sessions 1-4, they use observation to collect qualitative data. They consider the importance of oxygen to the body and examine how oxygen moves from the lungs into the blood and the cells. They also discover how the body rids itself of waste carbon dioxide and consider how the heart and circulatory path help the entire body get the oxygen it needs.

In Sessions 5-7, students take measurements to collect quantitative data. They measure their aerobic-activity levels and pulse-recovery times. They also vote on whether cigarettes should be harder to buy. At the end of Session 7, students send their data to the unit database.

In Session 8, students discover what they can learn from display and analysis of the data in the unit database. They also see what they can learn from making comparisons with scientific data. At the end of the unit, students complete the Post-Unit Questionnaire.
