The What's the Weather? unit consists of eight sessions divided into two parts. Before beginning the unit, students complete the Pre-Unit Questionnaire. Then, in Sessions 1-6, they examine the water cycle, look at cloud cover and precipitation, and use humidity test paper to measure the amount of moisture in the air. They select a location to measure air temperature and practice measuring it. They begin to consider changing air pressure as an indicator of changing weather. They also describe wind as moving air and begin to use the Beaufort scale to estimate the strength of the wind. At the end of Session 6, students collect data to send to the unit database.
In Session 7, students discover what they can learn from display and analysis of the data in the unit database. Further examination of the water cycle and the study of cloud formation and cloud types allow students to deepen their understanding of weather. At the end of the unit, they have the opportunity to present highlights of their studies. They also complete the Post-Unit Questionnaire.
